15th January 1855. At St.Vincent from the Cape of Good Hope.
6th February 1855. Arrived at Southampton, Captain Boxer, with 12 passengers and a small amount of specie, a full cargo consisting of ivory, wool, hides, etc and about 50 tons of copper ore.
15th March 1855. After a thorough refit she sailed from Southampton Docks, Captain Boxer, for Marseilles to convey troops to the Crimea.
Chartered by the French Government.
29th March 1855. At 9·30 p.m. she run aground and stranded at Corrie, on the Spanish coast, while proceeding to the Crimea, has become a total wreak, and broken up. Part of her machinery and stores were put on shore. All hands were saved with the exception of one person, John Stewart, fireman, who was drowned.
8th April 1855. It is hoped that if the weather becomes moderate, the vessel may be saved. She lies about three miles to the north of Cape Trafalgar. Every exertion has been made by the crew, with other assistance (by lightening the ship, etc.), to extricate her from her present perilous position. The non-arrival of any of the crew furnishes proof that some hopes were entertained of saving the vessel.
11th April 1855. Captain Stewart went to Cadiz in the ‘Iberia’, to render, if possible, assistance in extricating the ‘Natal’ from her perilous position.
30th April 1855. Eight of the crew came home on the ‘Iberia’, and the rest will return on the ‘Madrid’.
24th May 1855. The officers from the ‘Natal’ arrived at Southampton on the ‘Iberia’.
